With Flynn's help, I could almost make the entire hilt of the ruination sword. I arrived at practice ready to conquer the world. Today would be the day I fully made the blade.
"Flapping fins in a festering sea," I swore when the magic fizzled out on my third try.
"It's all right, try again," Flynn said patiently. He was leaning against a tree and eating an apple. He'd found a space deep in the forest away from prying eyes and the distractions of the city. At first, being so far from civilization made me uncomfortable, but the more I failed, the more I appreciated the distance. I focused on pulling my magic together and watched it swirl up and form into the hilt of a sword before fizzling out again.
"Goddess bless the filthy grubbers."
Flynn raised his eyebrow and smiled around a bite of apple. "Wow, that was a mouthful."
I snorted when he almost spit out a piece of apple. "You're one to talk." I glared at my hands. "Why isn't it working?"
"This is an advanced combat magic, it isn't easy," he said.
I stifled the urge to roll my eyes. He'd said that before, but it didn't explain why over half the people in my class had managed to form the majority of the sword. They weren't spending extra time practicing like I was. It didn't make sense. I should have made just as much progress, if not more, than they had.
"Maybe we should take a break. You’ve been working hard. Maybe you need to give yourself some time to rest."
My hands fell to my sides; he was giving up.
"Okay," I said weakly. If the extra sessions with him weren't helping me master the magic, I felt certain resting would do no good.
"I have an idea." A childlike excitement filled his eyes. I wanted to go home and sleep, but I couldn't say no to him, not with that look on his face. He led me even deeper into the forest. The trees and underbrush were so thick, my foot got caught a few times. After yanking it free for the third time, I was ready to tell Flynn to turn around. I put my shoe back on and glared up at his back. As if sensing the heated look, he turned and quirked a mischievous brow.
"We're here." His voice was ominous. I closed the short distance between us and looked around. He’d been walking in front of me and I hadn't been able to see anything but the forest and his back. Lush green grass covered the oval shape of a small clearing. Birds swooped through the clearing before disappearing into the thick trees, tweeting happily as they went. How the clearing came to be, I couldn't say, but it was flat, underbrush and tree-free. No, that wasn't entirely true. Off to the left, there was a stump of an old tree and several logs ready to be split. An axe impaled the trunk. I let out a soft chuckle.
"You are ridiculous," I told him, placing a hand on my cocked hip.
